The 25th Annual John W Usera Memorial Soccer Tournament is July 22-24, 2016 in Rapid City!
Registration & Roster Deadline is July 8, 2016
Established in 1992 by fellow teammates from Rapid City and Ellsworth AFB to honor of John’s memory, the heart of the John W. Usera Memorial Soccer Tournament is “Friendship through competition” and awarding Scholarships to aspiring young athletes going on to college. Soccer605 Founder, Coach Connor McKee, was one of the many recipients of Usera Memorial Scholarships in 2007. The 2015 recipients were Jacob Sperlich and Makenzi Miller. You can check out the past scholarship recipients on West River Adult Soccer website at this link.
For the past two years, the same two teams have advanced to the men’s finals – the Bingo Boys (organized by Chris Sabrowski) and the Dirty Smurfs (organized by Jason Roe). Will it be a rematch again this year, with Sabrowski returning from deployment this weekend – just in time to pull the Bingo Boys together? Or will a newcomer team punch their ticket to the final?
In 2010, due to growing demand, the tournament added a separate women’s division. The Rushmore Girls won the inaugural women’s Usera Cup, and the “High Schoolers & Has Beens” have been awarded the big prize twice. But the women’s division is never a given. Last year, Team Carli Lloyd defeated CNC to take home the top prize. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only adult women’s outdoor tournament in the State. Ladies – don’t miss this opportunity to claim the title – THE BEST WOMEN IN SOUTH DAKOTA! And at the same time, enjoy friendship through competition, become a part of South Dakota soccer history, and support a great South Dakota soccer event!
John lost his life as a result of a car accident when traveling home from a tournament in Omaha, Nebraska. John was an avid soccer player, beloved son, brother, and friend to all who knew him. Each year since 1992, the Usera Cup is played in the spirit and memory of soccer competition, family and friendship that John demonstrated.
Officiating at the Usera Cup is a wonderful experience for referees too. They are every bit as excited each year for the event as the players and fans are, and come away with some wonderful memories of camaraderie & good competition.
The John W. Usera Memorial Soccer Tournament supports various community programs such as continued Referee Development & Education, and Youth Soccer in Rapid City. Put this tournament on your bucket list for 2016 – and you’ll want to return year after year!
